Homeowners in Cave Creek (in the Scottsdale area) had a limestone floor installed by a less-than-reputable contractor. The installation was not done properly, and the floor had severe lippage (uneven tiles), in addition, the contractor applied a wax coating to achieve a temporary shine. Worried that they would have to replace the floor, they decided to call Bella Stone Care for a free consultation and estimate to see if the floor could be salvaged.
Fortunately, we knew we would be able to correct the problems and achieve a brand new look for this floor. First, we completely removed the existing sanded grout, because sanded grout is not conducive to the grinding process. Then we re-grouted the floor with a non-sanded grout mixed with a latex base to ensure the best bond strength of the grout and allow for optimal grinding results.
With the floor prepared, we began the multistep grinding, honing, and polishing process. We used a series of progressively finer grits throughout the job. With the floor grinding, we leveled the uneven tiles and removed the wax coating. Our honing and polishing (using a polishing compound) gave the floor the glossy, reflective look the homeowners wanted. The baseboards were stone, as well, and we color sealed the grout lines on the baseboards to match the new grout on the floor.
Our final step was to apply a clear, penetrating sealer to inhibit staining, followed by a finishing dry buff. The homeowners were pleasantly surprised at how new and dramatically different the appearance of the limestone floor was. They said it turned out better than they ever expected it would.
